The Kinetic Chain
A throw is not produced by the arm alone. It is a whole-body movement in which force travels from the ground, through the body and into the implement.
This sequence is called the kinetic chain.
From the Ground to the Implement
The chain generally follows this order:
Feet push against the ground.
Legs begin to produce force.
Hips move or rotate.
Core transfers the movement through the trunk.
Shoulder and arm accelerate.
Hand applies the final speed to the implement.
The exact arm movements are different in shot, discus and javelin, but the basic sequence is almost exaclty the same.
Why the Order Matters
The largest and strongest muscles around the legs and hips should begin the movement. The trunk, shoulder and arm then add to the speed already being produced.
If the arm starts too early, the rest of the body contributes less. This can:
Reduce the speed of the implement.
Make the throw feel forced.
Place more strain on the shoulder and elbow.
Make the movement more difficult to control.
A good throw should feel like one connected movement rather than several separate actions.
Force Starts at the Ground
When you push against the ground, the ground pushes back against you. Throwers use this force to move across the circle or runway and accelerate the implement.
To use it effectively, you need:
Secure contact with the ground.
Strong and stable legs.
Controlled movement of the hips.
A core that can transfer force.
Correct timing between the lower and upper body.
Strength is important, but strength without coordination will not produce an efficient throw.
The Role of Balance and Stability
The kinetic chain works best when each part of the body provides a stable base for the next.
For example:
The feet provide a base for the legs.
The legs provide a base for the hips.
The hips and core provide a base for the upper body.
The shoulder provides a base for the arm.
Losing balance, allowing a knee to collapse or losing control of the trunk can interrupt the chain. Coaches sometimes call this an energy leak because some of the force is lost before reaching the implement.
What This Means for Training
Throwers should train the whole kinetic chain, not only the throwing arm. A balanced programme should include:
Leg and hip strength.
Balance and single-leg stability.
Core strength and rotational control.
Upper-body pushing and pulling.
Shoulder conditioning.
Mobility through the hips, trunk and shoulders.
