Javelin Conditioning
Javelin requires trunk control during the approach, withdrawal, delivery and block. The athlete must remain stable while moving quickly and placing the throwing arm overhead.
Core Strength
Dead bug — Develops trunk control while opposite arms and legs move.
Bird dog — Links the throwing arm with the opposite leg while keeping the pelvis stable.
Side plank — Strengthens the side of the trunk for approach, blocking and recovery positions.
Standing anti-rotation press — Trains the trunk to resist being pulled out of position.
Suitcase carry — Develops upright trunk control while carrying weight on one side.
High-plank thoracic rotation — Combines shoulder stability, core control and upper-back rotation.
Other Conditioning
Reverse lunge — Develops single-leg strength for the approach and block.
Single-leg Romanian deadlift — Builds balance and strength through the hips and hamstrings.
Calf raises — Strengthen the ankles and calves for running, planting and maintaining balance.
Resistance-band rows and shoulder external rotation — Develop control around the shoulder blades and throwing shoulder.
Overhead medicine-ball throw — Develops coordinated force through the legs, trunk and arms. Use only with coaching and a light, suitable ball.
Javelin Considerations
Include short, controlled approach runs without always completing a throw.
Develop running rhythm and posture before increasing speed.
Strengthen both sides of the body, not only the throwing arm.
Avoid excessive overhead throwing volume when the shoulder or elbow is tired.
Allow enough recovery between throwing and upper-body strength sessions.
